UPSC 2024 Eligibility Criteria

Here are some examples of civil services posts that can be allotted to the candidates after passing the PSC Civil Services Examination. The allocation of services is based on the rank and seniority of the candidate as well as the availability of vacancies in each service for any particular year.

Nationality: Candidates should be:

  • citizen of India, or
  • a subject of nepal or bhutan
  • Tibetan refugees who came to India before January 1, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  • A person of Indian origin who has come from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Educational Qualification: The candidate must have a graduation degree from a recognized university. Meanwhile, final year graduation candidates can also apply provisionally, but they will need proof of passing the degree examination before the specified date.

  • General and EWS: 6 attempts.
  • OBC: 9 attempts.
  • SC/ST: No limit.

Citizenship: Indian citizen.

Character and antecedents: Must be of good moral character and free from any criminal or corrupt conduct.

Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit to perform the duties of the post. To be eligible for some services like Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFOS), it is necessary to be fit.

UPSC 2024 Exam Pattern

UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages, where each stage serves a different purpose in the selection process. The three stages of UPSC CSE exam pattern are as follows:

UPSC Prelims 2024

Prelims is the first stage of UPSC CSE. UPSC preliminary exam is of objective type consisting of two papers, namely General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II. Also known as Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT).

  • Paper-I: General Studies (GS) – 200 Marks
  • Paper-II: Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) – 200 Marks

Both the papers are conducted on the same day with a duration of two hours each. GS paper includes subjects like History, Geography, Politics, Economy, Science and Technology, Environment and Current Affairs. CSAT paper is meant to assess the candidate’s understanding, analytical ability and basic aptitude skills.

UPSC Mains 2024

The main examination is a subjective type examination consisting of nine papers, which include one essay paper, four general studies papers, two optional papers and two language papers. In this, all the candidates who qualify the UPSC Main Examination are eligible for the final round, i.e. UPSC Interview.

UPSC Interview

It also includes personality test also known as interview which is conducted for the candidates who qualify for the main examination. This part of the examination assesses the candidate’s personality, behaviour, reaction to situations, knowledge of surroundings, mental alertness, critical power of assimilation, clear and logical presentation, balance of judgement, variety and depth of interest and other aspects.

Candidates selected in this round finally get a chance to participate in training for various posts and services on the basis of preference and rank. The personality test is conducted by a panel of experts and consists of 275 points. Preliminary examination is considered as a screening test and its marks are not added to the final merit list.

UPSC CSE exam pattern is rigorous hence the candidate needs to understand various subjects and possess the necessary analytical and communication skills.
